Cops nab suspect with bag of guns

Quick action by police in Berbice led to the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of a cache of arms at Adelphi, East Canje,  around 10 pm on Tuesday.
Stabroek News learnt that three police officers who had just responded to a report of domestic violence were on their way out of a street when they recognized two men who were known characters on a bicycle and ordered them to stop. The men were carrying two bags, reports said, and refused to stop.

One of the policemen then kicked the bicycle, causing the men to fall and they got up and ran in separate directions. However, one of the policemen managed to hold on to one of them.
In his bid to escape, the suspect savagely bit the officer. His colleague who ran to his assistance was also bitten. The other suspect successfully eluded capture.

According to a police press release, the officers were travelling in an unmarked vehicle. Police said that a search of the bag which they retrieved from the captured man, revealed two AK-47s, one Uzi 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, one 12-gauge shotgun and three live 12-gauge cartridges.

The second suspect who escaped was also carrying a bag and it is believed that the bag may also have contained weapons.
The release said the captured man will be charged shortly.

Stabroek News learnt that the men were part of a gang operated by wanted man David ‘Colonel’ Mc Pherson, who was shot dead by police in June this year. Police, acting on information had launched a stakeout and cornered Mc Pherson in a bushy area in a yard where a shop is operated at Betsy Ground, East Canje.

Meanwhile, the police also said yesterday that ranks in Berbice searched the home of a farmer around 10:30 pm and unearthed a 12-gauge pump action shotgun and three live matching cartridges under a mattress.
Police made a sweep on the man’s Number 35 Village, Corentyne home around 10:30 pm on Tuesday based on information received, a release said.
