GPF take early lead

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) with a tally of 124 points yesterday ended as the leading faction of the first day of the Inter-Services Athletics Championships being held at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
Trailing behind was the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), with 49 points followed by the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) on 34 points.

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is in the penultimate position with 27 points ahead of the City Constabulary division with no points.

The events continue today from 10am at the same venue and will reconvene on Friday with the final events.

In the men’s 1500 and discus throw the GPF raked in some serious points grabbing the top three spots of each event.

In the 1500m, while defending champion Larry Josiah led for most of the race, newcomer and national athlete, Dennis Horatio, produced an energetic sprint in the final 200m to beat Josiah into second place.
Horatio clocked 4:27.80s while Josiah, clocked  4:28.30s, 0.30 seconds ahead of third place finisher Kelvin Ceres.

In the corresponding female race, the GPF’s Samantha Williams won in 6:37.90s and Asana Mentore, finished second in 6:40.60s.

GPS’ Shodel Clementson in 7:40.10s was third.

In the men discus, GPF’s Ronald Payne, with a best throw of 37.94m, won from Colis Fraser, 34.22m, while Michael Pollydore sealed the third spot with his best throw 32.50m.
