Ballistic testing on an Uzi semi automatic firearm which was recently intercepted in the Berbice area by the authorities has determined that it was used in a Wellington Park, Corentyne robbery during which a security guard was shot and killed in May this year.
According to the police, ballistics examination done on the semi automatic pistol has indicated that the weapon was used in the May 17 attack during which Arjune Gobin, 47, of Bloomfield, Corentyne, was shot and killed and 46-year old Rajendra Persaud of Number 36 Village, Corentyne was injured.
The weapon was found among a cache of arms intercepted on Tuesday September 21 at Adelphi Public Road and Berbice Divisional Commander Steve Merai expressed concern about the high-powered semi-automatic rifle that was part of an arms cache seized by police early last week, but stressed that police are on top of the situation.
In addition to the Israeli-made Uzi semi-automatic weapon, which is not in the local military inventory, police recovered two AK-47s and a 12-gauge shotgun with three live cartridges.
Police Commissioner Henry Greene has said the AK-47s belong to the Guyana Defence Force. He said ballistic tests would have to be done to determine whether the weapons have been used in any crimes and they were due to be transported to the police laboratory in Georgetown for tests to be done.
