Two dead in separate accidents in Essequibo

Two men are dead after being involved in separate vehicular accidents in Essequibo over the weekend and both drivers are in police custody assisting with investigations.

The first incident occurred around 18:45 hrs on Saturday at Windsor Castle Public Road, Essequibo Coast which resulted in the death of Mohan Lall, 49, also of Windsor Castle. Lall succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown hospital yesterday.

According to a police press release, motor lorry GEE 6177, driven by Bharrat Persaud, 50, of Devonshire Castle was proceeding north along the western side of the road while Lall who was on a pedal cycle was proceeding in the opposite direction on the same side of the road. Investigations revealed that Lall drove into the path of the truck and was struck down.

The release said that injured man was taken to the Suddie Hospital where he was admitted and transferred to the Georgetown Hospital the following day. Around 8 am yesterday he succumbed.

The other accident occurr-ed around 02:00 hrs on Sunday on the Jib Public road and resulted in the death of Ajodha Manniram, 52, of Hampton Court, Essequibo.

The police release said motor pick up GMM 6760 owned and driven by Mohan Manniram, 37, also of Hampton Court, with occupants Ajodha Manniram (his brother) and Julia Brummell, 34, was speeding along the eastern side of the road. The driver lost control of the vehicle and ran into a trench.

According to the release, the driver fled the scene while the other two were taken to the Suddie Hospital and were admitted.

Manniram died around 21:00 hrs the same day.
The driver has since been arrested, the release added.
