Bartica woman on ganja trafficking charge

A woman accused of having a quantity of cannabis in her possession for the purpose of trafficking was yesterday remanded to prison when she appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on October 7 at the Bartica Police Station, Lisa Fung-A-Fat of Second Avenue, Bartica had in her possession 21 ½ grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when it was read to her by the acting chief magistrate.

Prosecutor Lionel Harvey in presenting the facts of the case told the court that on the day in question, the police were on patrol when the car in which the woman was travelling was pulled over and searched.

According to Harvey the illegal substance was later uncovered.

The unrepresented Fung-A-Fat was later remanded to prison. Her matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for October 27.
