Accused in sheep thefts granted bail

Two men who appeared at the New Amsterdam Court before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo on Monday, charged with larceny of sheep were granted their pre-trial liberty in the sum of $25,000 each.

The court heard that on October 10 last Lakeram Persaud, a labourer and Raymond ‘Avinash’ Brito, a taxi driver stole three sheep valued $75, 000 belonging to Jermaine Robertson, Latchmandai Seenarine and Romal Seecharran of West Coast Berbice (WCB) villages.

Reports are that the defendants who reside at Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara were transporting the animals in a blue Toyota AT 212 Carina along the No. 40 Village, WCB road when they were arrested.

Police from the Weldaad Station stopped and searched the car around 2 pm and intercepted it after the stolen sheep were discovered. The men pleaded not guilty to the offence and are scheduled to return to court at Fort Wellington on November 4.

The cars have since been returned to the owner but reports are that the sheep are still in the custody of the police at the Weldaad Station.
The owners of the animals have to travel to the station on a daily basis to feed them, this newspaper was told.
