Forty-four-year-old Mark Vieira who is accused of damaging the windows of another man’s vehicle was on Monday sent on his own recognizance after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against the race car driver is that on October 11 at McDoom Public Road, East Bank Demerara, he unlawfully and maliciously damaged four glass windows on one Grand Cherokee vehicle valued $330,000 property of Raymond Anthony Rutherford.
Vieira of 25 Lamaha Avenue, Bel Air Park pleaded not guilty to the charge of malicious damage to property when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey in giving the facts of the case told the court that on the day in question the virtual complainant attempted to park his vehicle in front of the defendant’s property when Vieira became angry and smashed the man’s vehicle windows with a piece of wood.
Attorney-at-law Glenn Hanoman, who represented the defendant, told the court that the details of the matter will be fully ventilated at the time of the trial, noting that his client will return to vigorously vindicate his name of the charge.
In his bail application, Hanoman told the court that his client is innocent of the charge levelled against him and that he had been placed on $20,000 station bail and is cooperating with the police in their investigations.
He said too that Vieira has no previous convictions, poses no risk of flight and has a fixed place of abode.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey had no objection to the lawyer’s bail application.
Hanoman’s submission for his client to be admitted to self-bail was acknowledged by the magistrate.
Vieira was ordered to return to court on December 1.
