Tylenol 8-Hour caplets recalled

-warning issued for Miracle Mineral Solution
The Government Analyst Food & Drug Department has announced a voluntary recall of the 50-count bottles of Tylenol 8-Hour Caplets while a warning has been issued for Miracle Mineral Solution (also known as Miracle Mineral Supplement.

In a press release, the Department said manufacturers McNeil Consumer Healthcare issued the recall of Lot No. BCM 155 of the Tylenol 8-Hour Caplets due to complaints of a musty or mouldy odour. This odour is thought to be caused by the presence of trace amounts of a Chemical 2, 4, 6-Tribronoanisole. The manufactures therefore issued the recall as a precautionary measure.

The Department also issued a warning for the Miracle Mineral Solution, which is obtained primarily by way of internet sales. The product is sold allegedly as a treatment for a number of severe diseases, including HIV, TB, Malaria, hepatitis and cancer.

Miracle Mineral Solution contains 28% Sodium Chlorite and it is usually applied with a citric acid “activator.” Users are instructed to mix drops of the Solution with drops of citric acid in the ratio of 1:5 to water or fruit juice and then consume the mixture. Mixing Sodium Chlorite and citric acid generates Chlorine Dioxide, which has been known to cause devastating effects to health. The most commonly reported effects are persistent vomiting and diarrhoea, sometimes leading to dehydration, abdominal pain and burning pain in the throat, the Department said.

Sodium Chlorite and Chlorine Dioxide also have anti-microbial properties and have legitimate uses in water treatment and hard-surface disinfection. Acidified Sodium Chloride is used as a spray or dipping solution for poultry, meats, vegetables, fruits and seafood.  The chemicals are safe for these purposes when used appropriately. Neither chemical has a regulated or approved use in a food, dietary supplement or for therapeutic effect. As such, there are no indications for personal use or consumption.

The Department is therefore calling on importers, pharmacy owners and consumers who have these products in their possession to submit same to its office. The Department can be reached on telephone numbers 222-8857 and 222-8859 and fax number 222-8856.
