Seven schools vying for IICA hydroponics awards

The Inter-American Insti-tute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) said the official closing and prize giving ceremony of the Secondary Schools Hydroponics Competition will be held today.

In a press release IICA said the contest was hosted in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

From the 37 schools the ministry selected to participate in the programme, based on a cluster system, seven: Port Mourant Secondary, Uitvlugt Secondary, Linden Foundation Secondary, Bygeval Multilateral, Richard Ishmael Secondary, Charity Secondary and Bladen Hall Secondary have qualified.

“Competition was very keen,” IICA Representative Ignatius Jean said and the qualifiers will participate in the penultimate segment of the contest, from which four will be adjudged winners. Schools will be vying for the Hector Munoz Trophy, the Minister of Education Trophy, the Minister of Agriculture Trophy and the IICA Representative Trophy.

The IICA said the objective of the contest which started on June 28, was to teach hydroponics as an alternative method of production and to stimulate and renew youth interest in agriculture. The closing ceremony is set for the Diamond Secondary School today at 9am.
