Mackenzie bridge attendants should be equipped with wireless radios

Dear Editor,

I know wireless communication is a fast means of making contact with people who are some distance apart. In today’s society, it seems as if the management of the Mackenzie/Wismar bridge sees it differently, and has taken a retrogressive step in terms of effective communication by having their employees equipped with green and red flags at both ends of the bridge – a distance of two hundred yards – indicating when to go or stop. In many instances, the wrong flag is used, which causes a traffic build-up and long lines at both ends of the bridge. When that occurs, frustration causes temper to rise, resulting in drivers and passengers becoming abusive towards bridge attendants. On many occasions in the past the police traffic department and the bridge officials had to be summoned to make decisions about who should go forward or reverse off the bridge.

It would therefore be modern and timely, for bridge traffic controllers to be fitted with wireless radios, so they could perform more effectively.

Yours faithfully,
Winslow Parris
