Why don’t the authorities use body bags?

Dear Editor,

I have a big problem with how the bodies of the dead are handled by the authorities when they arrive at scenes of mass murder and deaths, and have to transport the remains to the morgue.

Bodies in the Bartica massacre were thrown on top of each other in a speedboat and transported to Georgetown. The same thing happened after the Lusignan killings a few years ago. And last Friday, on the No 19 Public Road, it was no different. The bodies and body parts were thrown into the back of a 4×4 pick-up in an irreverent manner.

It was horrible. If one of those persons had been my relative, I would not have been pleased at the manner in which they were placed in the back of the vehicle.

Perhaps the authorities do not know about the use of body bags. Perhaps, too, our human rights association is sleeping when things like these are happening. Perhaps they’re only concerned about the living.

This is something which should not be happening. What message are we sending to our fellow human beings and our children?
I am sure our health authorities can afford some body bags for these kinds of situation. This is a total disgrace. All in all, there doesn’t seem to be much dignity for the living these days, much less the dead.

Yours faithfully,
Leon Suseran
