Local gov’t ministry to take keener interest in landfill

…following fire
The Local Government Ministry has vowed to “be more involved in the management of the Mandela Landfill site” in light of the recent fire which broke out there.

This is according to the Mayor and City Council which met with the Minster, Kellawan Lall yesterday. “The Mayor and City Council has collaborated with the Ministries of Local Government and Works and the Guyana Fire Service [and] this has resulted in intensification of operations so as to contain the blaze,” a release from the M&CC stated.

A fire at the landfill  broke out early Tuesday morning and it is believed that it was a deliberate act. The fire was brought under control but still burns. Currently, there are four pumps, two fire tenders, three excavators and four bulldozers at the site to help battle the blaze.

“The council regrets the inconvenience and discomfort caused to resident who live in Lodge and other communities contiguous to the landfill site as a result of the fire,” the release added.
According to a government engineer the fire will take about a week to be full doused.
