Lusignan landfill catches afire

The Ministry of Communities has reported that a fire occurred  at the Lusignan landfill site on the East Coast Demerara yesterday.

According to a Ministry of Communities release last evening, a fire was spotted at the landfill site at approximately 5 am yesterday. Site Manager, Lloyd Stanton, arrived at the site around 6 am and saw thick smoke emanating from the southern end.

He subsequently reported the incident and a contractor was summoned to assist in quelling the blaze which by then the Ministry says, had consumed a section of the landfill of about 300-400 square meters. Personnel utilising an excavator and water pump eventually managed to contain the blaze at around 3:30 pm and security has been tasked with monitoring the area overnight and to report any sightings of smoke in the area.

The Ministry did not comment on the origin of the fire but proffered that fires are not alien to landfills and can occur for a number of reasons.
