Porter remanded over gun at Arimu

A  porter arraigned on charges of possession of firearm and ammunition without a licence and possession of narcotics was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation is that on November 8 at Arimu Backdam; Cuyuni River, Stephen Pearson had in his possession one 9mm pistol without licence and 25 9mm live ammunition without licence. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the two charges when they were read to him.

On the same day also at Arimu Backdam, Pearson is accused of having in his possession 494 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking to which he also entered a not guilty plea.

Police Sergeant Lennox Thornhill in his address to the court said that on the day in question, the police were conducting patrols in the Arimu Backdam area when the accused was found with the items mentioned in the charge in his possession.

He was then cautioned, arrested and charged for the offences levelled against him.
When given a chance to speak, Pearson declined.

He was remanded to prison until November 23. His matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrates’ Court.
