Bartica taxi driver denies $.5M theft

A taxi driver accused of stealing $500,000 was yesterday placed on bail after pleading not guilty to a simple larceny charge. Melroy Solomon of 108 Four Mile Potaro Road, was granted $100,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. It is alleged that on December 3 at Bartica, he stole the money from Shawn Welcome.

No details of the case were asked for by the magistrate.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford had no objections to the accused being granted his pre-trial liberty but requested that bail be in a substantial sum to ensure he returns to stand trial. Solomon was represented by attorney Peter Hugh.

After the magistrate granted Solomon bail, the case was transferred to the Bartica Magistrates’ Court for January 5.
