Taxi driver granted self bail over assault charge

A taxi driver accused of assaulting a woman was on Friday placed on self bail when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to a charge of unlawful assault.

It is alleged that on February 14, at Vlissengen Road, Timothy Vantull unlawfully assaulted Tricia Joseph.

Vantull, who was unrepresented by counsel, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Joseph was absent from court for unknown reasons.

Vantull told the court that he resides at Hadfield Street and he is a taxi driver.

He further went on to say that he was tired showing up at court and every time he is there the virtual complainant (VC) was absent. Vantull said the police had informed him that he had to attend court twice before and he did. However, the magistrate told him that this was the first time his case was being called.

Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick did not object to the man being granted his pre-trial liberty and the magistrate placed him on self bail.

Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry also asked the prosecution to ensure that the VC is summoned to attend court.
Vantull, who was also placed on a bond to keep the peace, will make his next court appearance on March 20.
