‘Butt’ of a joke lands duo in court

Two men, who assaulted each other over a butt touching joke which was misconstrued were on Friday fined $25,000 each when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on February 9, at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, Terry Wilson unlawfully assaulted Orwin Welcome and Welcome in turn assaulted Wilson.

Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick stated that Wilson and Welcome know each other as they both work at the 41 bus route. He further stated that on the day in question, Wilson and Welcome had a misunderstanding and they fought.

When given a chance to speak, Wilson explained that the day of the incident, he felt Welcome touch his butt and he told Welcome that he does not make jokes like that. He stated that they started to argue and a fight ensued. He further stated that during the fight, his chains burst.

When given a chance to speak, Welcome explained that it was his friend who touched Wilson and ran away.
Welcome said Wilson had a cup in his hand and when he turned around, he saw Welcome throw water in his face.
Welcome said he then threw his cup at Wilson and they started to fight.

He said that he too was wearing a chain and Wilson broke it.
He added that although both of their chains broke, Wilson got his back.
After listening to them, the magistrate ordered Wilson and Welcome to pay fines of $25,000 each.
