Sophia taxi driver charged with causing death by dangerous driving

Gordon Vantull, a 57-year-old taxi driver of Section ‘B’ Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was yesterday charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He appeared before Magistrate Rochelle  Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him. Vantull pleaded not guilty and was placed on $ 450,000 bail. The matter was adjourned to March 5th, 2024. Denese Paul, a 54-year-old housewife lost her life when the speeding motor car she was in, and driven by Vantull, lost control and collided with a median on the Beterverwagting Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

A police press release had said that Vantull was charged for the fatal accident which occurred at about 2:35 am on Sunday. An ambulance service was summoned to the scene, and the woman was seen and examined by a doctor who pronounced her dead.

Paul’s daughter, Delecia Watson, told Stabroek News that her mother was on her way home from an ‘Oldies’ party at the time of the accident. At about 3 am on Sunday, the family received a call and was informed about the accident. Watson recounted that upon arriving at the scene of the accident she saw her mother’s body lying motionless on the road.

Paul was a mother of five  and was described as the pillar of the home. “Mommy was we everything. She was the head of the home and when she was around everybody would be so happy. She was the light and the backbone of the home”, the daughter said.

 A post mortem examination was conducted on Paul and revealed that she died as a result of multiple injuries.
