De Kinderen man dies after vehicle flips on Mabura Road

Nashaw Shameer was pronounced dead on arrival at the Lethem Hospital yesterday morning. A second passenger, the dead man’s uncle, was admitted a patient to the hospital while the other two occupants escaped with minor injuries.

Stabroek News learnt from a police source yesterday that Shameer was one of four passengers headed to Lethem in motor vehicle PJJ 567. The driver, 18-year-old Esau Akbar, was “negotiating” a turn when he came upon some boulders on the road. Akbar, the source reported, lost control of the vehicle causing it to “turn turtle”.

Shameer, who was sitting behind the driver on the left side of the vehicle, was said to have been “pinned” after the vehicle flipped over. He is believed to have died immediately after the impact.

Esau Akbar Senior was admitted to the hospital and is said to be in stable condition.

When Stabroek News visited Shameer’s Lot ‘B’ De Kinderen Public Road, West Coast Demerara home yesterday afternoon relatives had already prepared for a wake.

His mother-in-law, Veerammah Bhopaul, told this newspaper that she was the first to receive the shocking news.

“My daughter [Shameer’s wife] was not at home and sometime around 10.25 this morning [yesterday] a relative from Diamond called to tell me what had happened…I still can’t believe it,” Bhopaul said. “It happen so sudden.”

Bhopaul said that shortly after receiving the news from her relative, the Lethem Hospital telephoned. The hospital, she said, informed her that Shameer was pronounced dead on arrival at the institution.

Nanda Shameer, her eyes red and puffy, said her husband left for his relatives’ home at Diamond New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara early yesterday morning.

“He left Diamond at about 5.30am to travel up to Lethem…he had to pick up his uncle (Akbar Senior) first,” Nanda recalled. “The next thing I know I came home to hear this bad news.”

Her husband, she explained, would normally travel to Lethem with his uncle Akbar Senior for construction and mason work.

The man also leaves to mourn a child from an earlier relationship.
