Shopkeeper remanded over wounding of woman in interior

A 36-year-old hinterland shopkeeper was on Friday not required to plead to the indictable charge of felonious wounding when she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Beverley Branker is alleged to have unlawfully and maliciously wounded Roxanne James at Arimu Backdam on March 8 with intent to wound, injure and cause her actual bodily harm.

Branker was represented by attorney-at-law Peter Hugh who applied for reasonable bail. He stated that the virtual complainant while still in the hospital was out of danger but Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford contended that the fact that the VC is still in the hospital means that her condition is still serious.

Branker’s bail was refused and she was remanded to jail until March 24 when she will make her next court appearance at the Bartica Magis-trate’s Court.
