Vendor charged with stealing from car

A clothes vendor was refused bail on Friday when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson charged with simple larceny.

Michael Sukhnandan

Michael Sukhnandan, 31, of 135 Grove Squatting Area pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.

It is alleged that on June 3 at Sandy Babb Street, he stole one laptop valued $120,000 and four cheque leaves valued $400; the total value being $120,400 which was the property of Alexi Ramotar.

When asked if he had anything to say, Sukhnandan asked for bail to be granted.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford objected to bail being granted.  He said that the offence was the not the first of a similar nature for the defendant.  He added that while being on a bond Sukhnandan continues to commit crimes.

Telford said that on the day in question, Ramotar parked his car and went into a business place on Sandy Babb Street.

When he returned to his car, he realised that his lock had been tampered with; further checks revealed that the said articles were missing.  The defendant was later found with the articles in a bag he had in his possession.

Bail was then refused and the matter was put down for July 20.
