Assault charge dropped against Dr Shamdeo Persaud after wife declines to testify

Chief Medical Officer Dr Shamdeo Persaud yesterday had charges of assault and threatening behaviour against him dismissed after his wife Romona Persaud told the court that she no longer wanted to proceed with the matter.

They were both ordered to pay $10,000 court costs.
Dr Persaud appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

The allegation against Dr Persaud was that on November 30 at their Alma Avenue Prashad Nagar home, he unlawfully assaulted and used threatening behaviour to Ramona Persaud.

The doctor pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry before whom he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The matter was held in-camera. After the virtual complainant indicated to the court that she did not want to offer evidence against the defendant, the matters were dismissed against the doctor.
They were both ordered to pay $10,000 court costs each.
