RHTY&SC cricket teams launch $5M Pro-Education programme

The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) launched its $5M Pro-education Programme at the Port Mourant Secondary School on Tuesday.

The Club’s cricket teams presented materials valued $300,000 to the school’s staff. It also introduced a Teacher and Student Award Programme for the school in an effort to boost both staff and student performances.

The teams: Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under-19, Gizmos & Gadgets Under-23 and First Division and Metro Females presented each member of the staff with a package of educational, hygiene and newborn kits valued $8,000 each. A quantity of cricket bats was also donated to the school’s cricket team.

Secretary/CEO of the 2010 Guyana Cricket Board Club-of-the-Year Hilbert Foster said the teams chose the Port Mourant Secondary School because they shared a close relationship with Head Teacher Colin Bynoe. In his address, he also noted that the Club was impressed with the work ethics of the staff. He said the pilot programme will be expanded to eight other schools in the lower Corentyne area in 2012 if it proves successful. Under the programme, a special committee has been established to select the outstanding teacher and student based on personal discipline, attitude, and performance in the classroom and involvement in sports. The cricket team would honour the awardees with special prizes at the end of the school term.

Foster said this year the Club would be involved in over 50 Pro-education projects including educational scholarships, Tribute to Retired Teachers Programme, Lower Corentyne Outstanding Students Programme, Tribute to Teachers Programme, Region Six Educational Awards Ceremony, television programmes, annual magazine and  a donation of over $3M worth of educational materials to schools.

In his address on behalf of the school, Rayol Franklyn said he was grateful to the Club and its teams for making the staff feel appreciated. He also said that he and his colleagues would continue to work beyond the call of duty to boost the performance of every student of the school.
