Early registration for Bahamas family law conference closes month end

The Planning Committee for the International Society of Family Law Caribbean Regional Conference is advising participants that early registration for the conference hosted by the Council of Legal Education Eugene Dupuch Law School in the Bahamas will close at month end.

According to a press release, the conference is set for March 17-19 at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel in Nassau. From February 1, the registration fee will increase from $350 to $400. The fee includes conference materials, breakfast, lunch and snacks.

The conference is being held under the theme ‘The Legal and Social consequences of the Disintegration and Reintegration of Families’ and matters to be discussed include marriage and divorce, cohabitation, property distribution, mediation, paternity and inheritance, trans-racial, inter-country and same-sex adoption, assisted reproduction and ethical issues, child development, international child abduction, juvenile delinquency, domestic violence, human rights and the family and same sex marriages.

“More than 40 distinguished jurists, legal scholars, psychologists, social workers and educators from the Caribbean, Canada, the UK, the US, Germany, Sweden and Serbia will be presenting papers at the conference,” the release said. Among them are Justice Matthew Thorpe from the Court of Appeal of England and Wales; Justice Nancy Flatters from the Calgary Family and Youth Court in Alberta, Canada; Dr Jane Adolphe of Ave Maria Law School, an expert in Family Law, International Law, Criminal Law and Canon Law, who has acted as the delegate for the Holy See at various regional and international conference and Dr Bill Doherty of the University of Minnesota, educator, researcher, writer, therapist and media personality and “the leading authority on counselling divorce-seeking couples to find alternative solutions.”

On March 17 there will be a pre-conference Judges’ Forum on Judicial Dispute Resolution conducted by Justice Flatters and a simultaneous Students’ Forum conducted by Dr Leighton Jackson of UWI Faculty of Law, Jamaica; Tracy Robinson of UWI Faculty of Law, Cave Hill and Justice Thorpe.
