Careless lorry driver fined $20,000

A man who admitted using the road in a careless manner was yesterday fined $20,000 or ordered to spend two weeks in prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. On January 26 at Friendship Public Road, East Bank Demerara, Lloyd Williams drove motor lorry GNN 913 without due care and attention to other persons using the said roadway.

The man pleaded guilty to the charge of careless use of the roadway when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

In giving the facts of the case, Police Corporal Venetta Pindar told the court that on the day in question the defendant was proceeding west along the Friendship Public Road when he was seen driving in a careless manner by Magistrate Leslie Sobers who subsequently reported the matter to the police.
According to Pindar, the police were later called in and Williams was arrested and charged for the offence to which he admitted.
