Slow recovery for shot sisters, shooter still at large

As police continue to hunt for the main suspect involved in the shooting of the two sisters in Quamina Street in the city, the hospitalized women continue to recover slowly.

A sibling of Michelle Richards, 19, of Anna Catharina, West Coast Demerara (WCD) and her elder sibling, Sharon Taylor, told this newspaper yesterday that the two young women have shown significant signs of improvement in their conditions.

She said that Taylor was transferred to the female surgical unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) from the High Dependency Unit and she noted that while Taylor continues to experience problems breathing she was feeling better as the days go by. She said that three bullets have been removed from the women’s body, including one from her left thigh, the groin area and one which passed closed to her lung.

Se said that the latter wound remains serious as her intestines were also damaged. She said that Sharon sometimes “pants for breath whenever she speaks to us’ but she said that the family is praying that the two sisters will recover fully from the incident.

Richards, meantime, is being monitored by staff at the HDU and the sibling noted yesterday that the young woman may eventually lose vision in the left eye. She said that her sister was complaining yesterday that the eye was paining and that she could not see through it.

Sharon Taylor

The suspect involved in the shooting, Malvin Taylor, remains on the run and his wife’s relatives noted yesterday that they continue to live in fear. Another relative noted that the police appear to be foot-dragging where arresting the man is concerned since it was noted that the suspect was in contact with his relatives. Reports are that around 10 pm on Thursday evening, Sharon Taylor, and Richards, were shot at close range allegedly by Taylor’s husband as the man confronted another individual he believed was having a relationship with his wife.

The man shot at the other man but he escaped and Taylor subsequently turned his attention to his wife and her sister.

They were both rushed to the GPH bleeding profusely and in an unconscious state.
The man drove away with the couple’s 4 and 9 year old children but the car was recovered and the children were recovered at his relatives’ home in Dowding Street, Kitty.
Police have since issued a wanted bulletin for the 34-year old Taylor.
