Woman declines to testify in jewels case

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday ordered a woman to pay $20,000 court costs after she declined to give further evidence in a matter of simple larceny against a man.

It is alleged that on January 27 at Georgetown, Raul Rodrigues stole a quantity of jewellery valued at $275,000 from Shemeka Barnette.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to the facts as presented by Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, on the day in question, the virtual complainant  placed the articles in question on a washing machine and left to go elsewhere.

Upon her return the VC found her jewellery missing. Pindar said that a report was subsequently made to the police, who later arrested and charged the defendant.

When asked by the magistrate her reasons for not proceeding with the matter, the VC said that the defendant’s family had compensated her in the sum of $40,000, and she was satisfied.

The matter was dismissed and Barnette was ordered to pay the $20,000 court costs.
