Salesgirl fled hotel room with man’s jewellery

A salesgirl who appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday on a  charge of simple larceny was placed on $80,000 bail.

It is alleged that on October 28, 2010, Amrita Singh of 176 Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara,   stole a gold chain and pendant valued at $380,000 from Quacy McKay.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her in Court One at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to the facts as presented by Corporal Venetta Pindar who was prosecuting, Singh and the Virtual Complainant (VC) share a relationship and on the day in question the two went to a hotel.

While there the VC took off the jewellery, placed them on the bed and went to take a bath.

Corporal Pindar said further that upon the VC’s return he discovered that the items as well as the defendant had disappeared.

Subsequently a report was made to the police and Singh was arrested and charged.

After hearing the details, the magistrate transferred the matter to Court Two for report and fixture on January 21, and the defendant was placed on $80,000 bail.
