Cops trying to ID murdered driver’s last passenger

Police are trying to ascertain the identity of the person who hired taxi driver Charles Caesar on Sheriff Street, minutes before he was shot dead in Tucville late Sunday night.

Contacted yesterday, Crime Chief Seelall Persaud would only say that “we have a lead about a customer that we are pursuing.” He said that he could not say if this person was the customer who Caesar left the base with. He noted that investigators are pursuing several leads. An arrest is yet to be made.

Charles Caesar

Relatives are still baffled as to the motive for the killing.

Caesar, who was attached to the Ezee Runnings Taxi Service for several weeks, left the Sheriff Street base with a customer around 10:40pm. Reports are that he was sitting outside the base when a man came up and requested a taxi. It is unclear where the man was headed.

About five minutes later, a customer called the base requesting a taxi but numerous efforts by the dispatcher to contact Caesar via his radio set were futile.

Around 10:50 pm, residents of Perry Street, Tucville heard a single gunshot. One resident had recounted that when he ventured outside to investigate, he saw a body lying motionless on the roadway and a white motor car a stone’s throw away. All the car doors were open, the lights were on inside and the interior was turned upside down. The man had told this newspaper that the car keys were also missing and he opined that the perpetrator/s was looking for something.

Residents did not recall seeing anyone fleeing the scene but opined that the killer/s approached the man from the opposite direction and fled the same way.

Caesar was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital by the police and was pronounced dead on arrival.
