Housewife remanded over break and enter, unlawful escape

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Monday remanded to prison a housewife accused of breaking and entering and theft and unlawful escape from police custody.

The allegation against Shondell Kumbs is that on October 18, at Kitty, she stole a television set, a DVD player, a gold ring, and other items amounting to a total of $130,000, the property of Carmen Gittens.

It is also alleged that on the same day Kumbs escaped from the lawful custody of Police Rank 1658 Webster. She pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar told the court that Gittens had secured the said property and left. On returning she noticed that the padlock had been pried open, and upon further investigation found that the place had been ransacked and the said items missing.

Pindar told the court that the police were taken to the accused, who offered to take them to her home in Meadowbrook Squatting Area to recover the items. While there, the defendant made a request to use the washroom, which was granted and during that time she made good her escape. However, she was later captured and charged.

Kumbs was ordered to appear in court on February 8 for statements.
