Hairdresser put on self-bail on assault charge

A hairdresser was yesterday placed on self-bail after she appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on an assault charge.

It is alleged that on February 2 at East Ruimveldt, Natasha Benjamin unlawfully assaulted Shavonne Rodney. The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to the facts as presented by prosecutor Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, on the day in question the virtual complainant (VC) was passing through an alleyway when the defendant started calling her derogatory names. The court was told that the accused then went up to the VC and pointed her finger in her face, causing the VC to become annoyed. A report was subsequently made to the police.

When asked by the magistrate what she had to say for herself, the defendant of 45 Friendship, East Coast Demerara said that the VC along with her sister were passing through the alleyway and they started calling her unflattering names. Benjamin said further that she approached the VC, who then shoved her. This caused the defendant to collar the VC, “and we both went to the station.”

The accused was then admitted to self-bail and the matter transferred to Court Six for February 14.
