Parents lock gates of Wisburg school over conditions

The Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) of the Wisburg Secondary School this morning locked the gates to the learning institution in protest against the non responsiveness of regional and education officials to several issues affecting it.

Among the problems is the constant flooding of the Home Economics department, mosquito infestation and exposed electrical outlets in most of the classroom.

Stabroek News was told that some of these problems existed since 2007 and have never been addressed.

As a result of this morning’s action, students are playing street games and others have returned home.

On January 31 the Home Economics Laboratory was shut down by the school’s administration. Regional chairman, Mortimer Mingo;  regional councillor, Renis Morian and chairman of the Regional PTA body of Region Ten are presently at the school and will be joined by education officials shortly, to address the concerned parents.

Secretary of the PTA Michelle Inveary said that the decision to lock the school gates was taken at a PTA meeting yesterday. She said that in addition to sending several correspondents to the relevant authorities, the PTA has secured the expertise of a certified plumber who after examining the situation found that there is a broken pipe beneath the floor of the laboratory. She said attempts to secure a blueprint of the area from the relevant authorities have so far been unsuccessful.

The plumber, Inveary said has indicated that he was willing to address the problem free of cost.
