Beaten, robbed taxi- driver declines to testify

The two men accused of beating and robbing taxi driver David Christopher Megwah were yesterday freed after he told the court he did not want to offer evidence.

The allegation against Imran Khan and Simon McAllister was that on Tuesday, February 8, at Blygezight, Georgetown, being armed with a knife, they robbed Megwah of $5,060.
The duo denied the charge of robbery-under-arms when it was read to them by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, before whom they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

In giving the facts of the case, Police Corporal Venetta Pindar said that on the day in question, the defendants had hired Megwah to take them to a house at Blygezight Gardens. After he did so, Pindar said, they asked Megwah to wait on them and moments after he noticed them attempting to jump into a yard. According to Pindar, the complainant then told the men that they should not be jumping the fence and he suggested that since no one had answered their call, they should return.

The court heard that it was at this point that the accused placed a knife to Megwah’s neck and demanded his money. He quickly complied. Pindar related too that the men began beating Megwah about his body with a glass bottle and as a result he sustained injuries.

When given a chance to speak, however, Megwah told the court that he no longer wanted to proceed with the matter since he knows the defendants and was willing to give them “another chance.”

Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry then dismissed the matter and ordered Megwah to pay $10,000 costs for wasting the court’s time.
