Thirty-five health professionals start IT training

Thirty-five health care workers have started training in information technology (IT) through a Ministry of Health initiative, to ensure that they are computer literate.

At the opening session, Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran said the remedial programme started five years ago. He said the programme started humbly, with only a few computer systems, and it has grown with support from I-tech which has donated more systems to ensure its success. The programme is being executed at the Division of Health Sciences and Education Resource Centre at Liliendaal, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.

Ramsaran told the participants to view the sessions as a non-salary incentive, noting that government may not always be in a position to raise salaries.

The IT programme is convenient as it coincides with working hours and is being held at a minimum expense to participants. He also said that while the remedial course will continue, IT would also be introduced to basic nursing and medex courses.

GINA said other health care workers will also undertake training in file management, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Power Point and Internet.
