Lance Armstrong formally announces retirement

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Lance Armstrong, who recovered from  cancer to win the Tour de France a record seven times, formally  announced his retirement from cycling yesterday, a month  after his last race. The 39-year-old, who made a comeback to  the sport two years ago, said he was quitting for good to spend  more time with his family and his charities.

Heat’s “Big Three”
overwhelm Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) – The Miami Heat’s “Big Three”  combined to score 90 points and lead their team to a 110-103  victory over the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday. The Heat, led by  Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh, threatened to run  away with the game early but needed a fourth-quarter rally  after giving up a 22-point first quarter lead.

Arsenal rock Barca, Shakhtar pile on Roma misery

LONDON,  (Reuters) – Barcelona suffered a 2-1 defeat at Arsenal and AS Roma’s miserable run continued with a 3-2 home loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in Champions League last-16 first-round matches yesterday.

Barcelona squandered a 1-0 lead when Robin van Persie and Andrei Arshavin struck late to give Arsenal an unlikely edge to take into the second leg at the Nou Camp.

In Rome, Brazilians Jadson, Douglas Costa and Luiz Adriano scored before halftime for Ukrainian side Shakhtar in the Stadio Olimpico  after Simone Perrotta had given Roma the lead but the Italians needed a 61st-minute effort from Jeremy Menez to give themselves some hope for a daunting trip to Ukraine.

Bobcats extend contract
of head coach Silas

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina,  (Reuters) – The Charlotte Bobcats have extended the contract of head coach Paul Silas through the 2011-12 season and removed the interim tag from his job title, the NBA team said yesterday.

Silas, 67, who was named the club’s interim head coach in December after replacing Hall of Famer Larry Brown, becomes the franchise’s fourth head coach.
