Miners robbed man of silver chains at gunpoint

Two men accused of using a gun to rob a man of two silver chains were on Tuesday denied their pre-trial liberty after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation against Kurtis Banjoon and Keron Elkanah of Matthew’s Ridge is that on February 15 at Georgetown, they robbed Dominique Paul of two silver chains valued $40,000, property of the said Paul.

The jointly charged duo who appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court was not required to plead to the indictable charge of robbery under arms when it was read to them.
The virtual complainant was not present at court.

In giving the prosecution’s facts of the case, Police Corporal Venetta Pindar told the court that on the day in question, the virtual complainant was walking along High Street when he was accosted by the two.  According to Pindar, Banjoon placed a gun to Paul’s head and demanded the jewellery while Elkanah took them from him.

After listening to the facts of the prosecution case, the magistrate informed the unrepresented miners that they will be remanded to prison. Their matter was transferred to Court Five for February 28 for reports and fixtures for trial.
