Drunk driver’s licence suspended

Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo suspended the licence of driver Suesharpaul Bishun for one year, after he was convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol for a second time.

Bishun appeared in the New Amsterdam Court, where he confessed to the charge, which stated that he had 141 micro-grammes of alcohol in his breath when tested by traffic ranks on February 25.

Police said that Bishun, the driver of PJJ7308, was stopped at Pitt Street, New Amsterdam shortly after midnight on that day. He was subsequently taken to the Central Police Station, where he was tested, and was found to have more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

Questioned by the court, Police Sergeant Godfrey Platter said he was unaware as to whether the defendant was a first time offender but the Magistrate in perusing the man’s driver’s licence observed that he had committed the offence previously. Following the discovery, Bishun remained silent and Magistrate Nagamootoo imposed a $20,000 fine with an alternative of twelve weeks imprisonment, in addition to the suspension.
