Pregnant teen dies at GPH after complications

An autopsy conducted on the remains of a 17-year girl who died at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on Tuesday morning revealed that she died of complications during the early stages of pregnancy.

An investigation has been launched into the girl’s death.

While details are sketchy, reports are that the girl, whose name was given as Preya Gafoor, of Diamond, on the East Bank of Demerara, was admitted to the GPH on February 22 after she fell ill.

Gafoor was admitted to the Female Surgical Ward of the GPH and her parents were under the impression that she was being treated for an internal ailment, a source explained.

However, the girl’s condition deteriorated over the weekend and she subsequently passed away on Tuesday morning.

According to reports, the autopsy, which was conducted yesterday morning at the GPH mortuary, revealed that she was four months pregnant. Her relatives were left in a state of shock following the revelation.
