The annual Republic Anniversary meet sponsored by the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association kicked off last Thursday at Castellani swimming pool from 6:30 am with a limited number of competitors.
According to a press release, although only a few swimmers registered for the meet there were some record breaking performances with the first being in the grueling 60 lengths 1500 meters freestyle swim which had three participants. In this event Brittany Van Lange in the 13-14 category erased her own record of 19:51.80 which she had set two weeks ago in the February Inter-Club meet at 19:46.42.
Meanwhile Niall Roberts continued his show of dominance while making his debut in the 1500 freestyle swim in the 18-and-over category which saw him demolish Jamaal Sobers’ three-year-old 20:21.75 record to register 19:16.70 while Henk Lowe trailed a distant second in 22:06.06, the release stated.
