Countrywide screening for eye diseases launched

Forty Buxtonians were screened for cataract and other eye ailments as the Ministry of Health’s Regional Health Services Unit began a series of national eye care outreaches.

The Government Information Agency (GINA) said that of the 40, four persons were diagnosed with cataract, one with pterygium, three with suspected glaucoma while 20 were tested and treated. Tests revealed that the other patients did not require any treatment.

Persons who need treatment at the National Ophthalmology Hospital in Port Mourant were given referrals and they will be taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre to be prepped for surgery.

Administrative Assistant Cuba/Guyana Cooperation Nandkishore Persaud said the exercise is part of the Unit’s programme plan for 2011 and was included in the national budget.

Similar outreaches will be conducted at Suddie in Region Two; Wakenaam and Leguan in Region 3; the Enmore PolyClinic in Region Four; in Ithaca, Region Five; in Skeldon, Region Six; and several hinterland communities, including Mabaruma in Region One, Bartica in Region Seven and Lethem in Region Nine.
