Butcher struck down by car has 50/50 chance

Relatives of the butcher who was struck down by a car on Monday evening are clinging to prayers for his safe recovery although doctors said his chances are 50/50.

Gilbert Wharton, 21, of Laing Avenue is nursing a broken jaw, extensive facial damage, a broken left hand and leg injuries in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Wharton had left work on Monday evening and was on his way home when the accident occurred just after 8 pm on Thomas Road in front of Camp Ayanganna. Wharton and a co-worker were on their bicycles heading west while the car was travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the car was reportedly overtaking when he hit Wharton. The driver according to relatives is still in police custody. But police are still to visit Wharton in the hospital.

According to one relative the police said that they had visited Wharton yesterday morning but the nurses in ICU did not let them in.

The driver of the car, PHH 6610, is said to be attached to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Police Force.
