Canje family come under fire during failed robbery bid

East Canje scrap metal dealer Rooplall Roopchand, his wife and two children came under gunfire during a pre-dawn attack by robbers who were trying to break into his house.

Police are now looking for the four masked men who attempted to break into Roopchand’s Lot 231 Lord Street No 2 East Canje residence. Two of the men were armed with shotguns.

Roopchand was alerted to the robbers by his dogs, who were barking loudly at bout 1:30am. At the time, he was with his wife and children in the upper flat of their two-storey house. Subsequently, Roopchand looked out his window and spotted the men and asked what they were doing there. They immediately fired at him.

The gunfire shattered a window and a door and forced Roopchand and his family to seek cover. Although police responded quickly to the report of the attack, they did not find the men.
