How can the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces express such degrading sentiments about one who chose a military career?

Dear Editor,

The County meetings of the PPP which are being held to endorse the selection of Mr Donald Ramotar as the PPP presidential candidate by that party’s Central Committee have become the occasion  for President Bharrat Jagdeo to once again spew venom against Mr David Granger, the elected presidential candidate of the People’s National Congress Reform.

According to Mr Jagdeo, Mr Granger is disqualified because he served the PNCR interests during his years in the military, including his involvement in the establishment of the Guyana National Service, which he condemned and ridiculed as fit only for donning boots, guns and marching up and down.

Imagine, the President of the Republic, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the country’s armed forces, having and expressing such degrading sentiments about one who chose a military career and gave distinguished service, of the highest quality, to this nation during a very important period in its forty-five years of independent history.

How could Mr Donald Ramotar condone such behaviour from the President, on his platform, if he hopes to become President and Commander-in-Chief of the Guyana’s armed forces?

Yours faithfully,
Oscar Clarke
General Secretary PNCR
