Unemployed man put on $35,000 bail over assault

An unemployed Agricola resident was yesterday placed on $35,000 bail after he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton on an assault charge.

The allegation against Mark Johnson is that on August 31, 2010 at Agricola, East Bank Demerara, he unlawfully assaulted Gilford John so as to cause grievous bodily harm.

The 22-year-old was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The facts in the matter were not read by the prosecution. The accused was granted bail in the sum of $35,000 and the matter adjourned until May 25.

Meanwhile Jason De Nobrega was remanded to prison after he appeared before the magistrate accused of simple larceny.

It is alleged that on April 18 at Georgetown he stole from Rosanna Joseph one Bird cellular phone, valued at $29,000. The 17-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

As the address he gave the court and that which was in the police records differed, the prosecution objected to bail and the magistrate then ordered that the defendant be remanded.

The matter was adjourned until May 25.
