Cocaine addict gets four years for stealing Toyota 212

A man who acknowledged being a cocaine addict was yesterday sentenced to four years imprisonment after stealing one silver-coloured  Toyota 212 motorcar, valued at $2.7M.

Andrew Taylor yesterday appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty with an explanation to the charge.

Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, told the court that on April 22, it is alleged that Tyrone Johnson parked his motorcar at the Berbice car park and left his keys in the ignition while he went to converse with friends in the area.

Taylor, the accused, then made his way into the vehicle and drove off, leaving the virtual complainant  attempting to stop the moving vehicle. He failed to do so and later made a report of what had taken place.

Police, acting on the report, managed to stop the vehicle in the vicinity of the Bagotstown Public Road area. Taylor was arrested and cautioned.

The defendant, in explaining his reason for such action, stated that he stole the car with the intention of using the parts. “Next thing I know, I’m in a police chase. They caught me and beat me up, saying I stole their car from the market area and I’m thinking I got this car from Albouystown,” the defendant added.

He further begged for an opportunity to move on with his life since he has intentions of going to the rehabilitation centre to get help in curbing his addiction to cocaine.

The prosecutor added that damage was done to the vehicle with Johnson stating that it was the left side bumper and trafficator that were damaged.

The accused made an apology to Johnson after which he was remanded to prison.
