Father and son charged in assault of woman, daughter

A father and son were yesterday placed on $25,000 bail each by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, after answering charges of unlawful assault.

Ryan Perreira is accused of unlawfully assaulting Shireen Gingarie while his son, Teron Perreira, is charged with unlawfully assaulting Gingarie’s daughter, Olivia DeFreitas.

The prosecution alleged that DeFreitas went to her mother’s home, where she saw Ryan Perreira hitting her mother about her body with a cutlass. Teron Perreira then started to point his finger in the face of the young woman and dealt her several cuffs about her body.

The matter was reported and the father and son were arrested and charged.

The complainants were absent from court but when the two defendants were given a chance to speak. Ryan Perreira said that it was Gingarie drew a knife and was aiming at him. “My son come in and start saying ya’ll don’t break no windows,” the man continued.

The man added that the woman’s daughter then made her way into the house and involved herself. He stated that both his son and DeFreitas were holding onto each other’s hair. “Is me and Shireen end up parting them,” he finished.

Teron Perreira then recalled what happened, telling the magistrate that DeFreitas came in and saw him in an attempt to part the fight and started to hit him, with no questions asked. “She aint ask nothing…just come and start bax me up,” he said.

Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry granted the two defendants bail and transferred the matter to Court 10 for report and fixture on May 6.
