Man stabbed after drink request refused – court hears

A man who was slapped with assault and wounding charges over a spurned drink request made an appearance yesterday before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on January 28, Wazim Perreira unlawfully assaulted Olivia Defreitas and maliciously wounded Christopher Chitram. The accused pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting,  told the court that Defreitas and Perreira had an exchange of words and  the accused got annoyed and assaulted the woman injuring her right shoulder.

In stating the facts of the case involving Chitram, Pindar said that the virtual complainant was having a drink when the defendant went into the yard and asked for one also. The VC turned down his request and the defendant left but returned and stabbed the man to his upper back and chest.

Pindar stated that the man had committed two previous offences and objected to bail.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry remanded Perreira to prison until February 17.
