Montrose supermarket robbery suspects remanded

The two suspects in the armed robbery at the Lahagoo Supermarket, in Montrose, appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court yesterday, where they were remanded to prison by Magistrate Judy Latchman.

It is alleged that on April 29, at Montrose, East Coast Demerara, being armed with a gun, Odingo Allen and Kevin Niles robbed Anupya Baburam of $80,000 in cash; two cellular phones valued $27,000; and a quantity of phone cards, valued $7,000.

Allen and Niles, ages 21 and 20, respectively, were not required to plead to the indictable charge of armed robbery when it was read to them.

In addition, Allen was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. It is alleged that on the same day, at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara, he had in his possession a .38 revolver and four matching rounds, both without being the holder of the respective licences. To these charges, Allen pleaded not guilty.

When prompted, the prosecution objected to bail, given the likelihood of Allen and Niles not returning to be tried; that they may interfere with witnesses if there are any; and that they could commit similar offences. As a result,

they were refused bail and the matter was adjourned until May 19.
