A Bare Root man, who was apprehended by public-spirited citizens after allegedly robbing a pensioner, was yesterday remanded to prison on a charge of armed robbery.

Kevin King, a 32-year-old porter of Bare Root, East Coast Demerara (ECD), appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was remanded to prison and the matter was adjourned until July 20, 2022.

In a statement, the police had said King, who allegedly committed the robbery on Thursday, was captured while he was trying to flee the scene.

He had allegedly robbed 68-year-old Sunny Mohan, a gardener of First Street Montrose, ECD, at around 06:30 hrs at First Street, Montrose.

King is accused of robbing the man of a Samsung A10 cell phone, valued $45,000, as well as $5,000 cash.

Police said Mohan was walking out of First Street, Montrose, heading to work, when he saw the suspect riding a bicycle, which was heading in his direction.

The suspect subsequently stopped beside the man, took out a knife from the back of his pants and pointed it towards Mohan while demanding money.

As a result, Mohan handed over the money and his phone to the suspect, who made good his escape in the southern direction on his bicycle. The police said that public-spirited citizens gave chase and captured King, who was handed over to the police.
