Jamaicans remain in custody over gun, ammo find

Five men, including three Jamaicans, remain in police custody as investigators continue to probe how they came to be in possession of an unlicensed gun, a quantity of ammunition and items suspected to be stolen.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, during a telephone interview, yesterday told Stabroek News that the Jamaicans did not offer explanations as to why they were in Guyana and one might have overstayed his time here. Persaud said investigators have since sought help from their Jamaican counterparts in dealing with the matter. At the moment, he said, there is nothing to suggest that the Jamaicans were involved in any sort of criminal activity here.

The Crime Chief added that ballistic tests on the weapon and the ammunition are yet to be completed.

Meanwhile a senior police official confirmed that the Jamaicans along with two Guyanese are still in police custody. He said that ranks are working around the clock and that it was too premature to release information.

Police had said on Monday that the men were arrested after a police search unearthed a gun, among other items at a Cummings Lodge home on the East Coast Demerara.

An unlicensed .45 Glock pistol with 8 matching rounds and seventeen .38 rounds were found during the search at around 5.15 pm.

Additionally, the police seized a CBR motorcycle; a television set; six cellular phones and a stereo set with amplifier and speakers which are suspected to be stolen or unlawfully obtained.
